I created this project during a one-month NYU study abroad program in Havana, Cuba, where a small group of students were selected to develop a final art project while living and working in the city. I entered the program with the intention of tracing the lives my grandparents and great-grandparents lived in Cuba before immigrating to the United States during the Cuban Revolution. Using a collection of old family documents and photographs in Spanish, I spent my time translating, researching, and locating the places my family once moved through, including former homes and burial sites. The project was exhibited at the Ludwig Foundation in Havana as part of the program led by Professor Alexis Gambis.
Below are images of how my project was displayed at the Ludwig foundation. The installation invited viewers to navigate my computer desktop themselves, moving through folders that documented my family’s history. Whatever the viewer clicked appeared simultaneously on the TV screen above. The installation also included a table displaying original family photographs and research materials used throughout the process.
At the bottom of this page is a screen recording that shows how the project was displayed on my computer and walks through each of the folders and materials used in it. Because it includes personal family materials, the recording is password-protected. Feel free to reach out via email, DM, or the contact form if you’d like access.
***Due to privacy, the full video must be password-protected, reach out to me for the password to see the full screen recording of my project
